Saunders Street Residence

Set on steep headland with a 16m slope falling away from the street, this home overlooking the Swan River in Mosman Park enjoys one of the best riverfront sites in Perth.

Given the complexities of access to the site for construction, the three level structure was designed as a system prefabricated off-site and craned into position prior to cladding. This strategy reduced earthworks and construction timeframes.

The client’s brief was responded to by arranging spaces into a series of layers and experiences, with elements located according to priority for privacy, river views and entertainment.  The scale of the street presence is deliberately restrained, with guests entering through a street lobby leading down to a water-filled sculpture court and views of the river beyond. Interiors are elegant with an emphasis on family life and the experience of comfort.

Respecting our client’s dedication to the celebration of fashion and design, the building is presented as a simple, light-filled backdrop for the display of art and furniture. The signature element of the home presents as a 6m square brass ring that catches the sunlight and shimmers in the riverscape – considered bling.  Control of solar access, ventilation, views and privacy is achieved by adjusting operable louvers facing east, west and north.
