Pennell Road Residence

Pennell Road Residence is a research into the relationship between people, architecture and site. Located toward the rear of a North oriented site, the home seeks to maximise available environmental and spatial benefits. Inspired by the form of a 1970’s caravan, the fluid concrete structure enclosing private spaces of the home is suspended above the ground - defining living spaces beneath. Surface textures compliment local built form characteristics.

Engaging a strategy we have honed over several projects, centred living spaces spill to courtyards North and South, glass walls retract to integrate inside and out, opening living spaces to the garden, natural light and fresh air. The ground floor has transformed into a partly enclosed verandah, increasing use of the front setback and actively engaging with the street. Positioning the swimming pool to the front of the home compliments this strategy physically and visually and has resulted in the unexpected, yet delightful, outcome where neighbours share the pool, promoting street activation, friendship and a focus on outdoor living.
